Kitchen wall tiles can truly make your kitchen more beautiful and inviting, if the installation is done correctly. The area that stands out the most is that area between in the wall cabinets and the back splash. This is not a difficult installation job, as long as you take your time and do it correctly. Tile will help your kitchen clean up more easily behind your range, and it’s economical to put in.
As you map out the area to be done, decide what type of tile you will be using, whether it be marble wall tile or some other type. Select a tile that you really like, since you’ll be seeing it every time you cook or clean in your kitchen. You may select something simple like travertine wall tile, or something with a bit more pattern, like glass mosaic tiles. Choose a grout color that compliments the color of the tile. You can also use a darker color when you grout wall tile, to make it stand out. This is an attractive way of tiling your wall.
You need to determine how much space you will have between tiles, too. The grout line’s width will tell you whether you should use grout that is sanded or non-sanded. Only use a non-sanded grout when the gap is 3/16 inch or smaller.
Prepare the wall area until it is clean and free of any detritus that might make it uneven when you begin the work with your kitchen wall tile. It should also be straight. After you level the wall surface, your need for preparation depends on the adhesive you will use for your tiles. You can use a tile adhesive that is purchased from a hardware store. Most tiles don’t require anything more special than that. Check the label on whatever adhesive you buy, to make sure it will work with the type of surface you are tiling.
Apply your mastic on the back splash area. This will hold most types of kitchen ceramic wall tiles. If you selected a heavy marble wall tile for your project, you’ll want a special adhesive for heavier materials. Put the adhesive on with a trowel with notches close to one quarter inch in size. When you comb or even the mastic out, it should have “corn rows” of neat mastic. Don’t put up more adhesive than you can tile over in a few minutes. Otherwise, it may begin to dry out before you apply the porcelain wall tile. Allow extra time if you are hand-cutting the tiles as you work.
When you place your tiles, work from the center or your wall area toward the sides. Push each tile in against the adhesive with a slight twist of the wrist, to set the tile in the adhesive firmly. If you have decided to use spacers, set them on the outside edge of each tile before you begin work on the next tile row.
If you have to cut the wall tiles to go around outlet boxes or other obstacles, cut the tile with a “cookie cutter” plan. The tile should flow all the way around the obstruction. Don’t piece smaller parts of tile together in spaces like this.
After all your tiles are placed and the adhesive has had time to set, clean the excess adhesive from between your kitchen wall tiles, then allow the tile to set overnight. It will be ready to grout the next day.
