The value and beauty of your tile installation depends not only on the type of tile you choose, but also the tile adhesive you use to pull the tile patterns together. There are many varieties of tile on the market today, and you will want to select the best tile your budget will allow, for a more attractive pattern, and you will want to select a quality adhesive to perform the installation.

If you are installing tiles on a wall that is not exposed to water, a mastic adhesive would be a good choice. Make sure you clear away any excess adhesive that finds its way between the tile grout lines, to avoid damage to the grout.

The most beautiful tile can create the most imperfect look if a proper adhesive isn’t used. The adhesive bonds the tile bottom to the surface the tiles are being set on. If you are fairly handy, you can usually take on a tiling job yourself. But if you have any doubts, hire a contractor to do the installation for you.

In choosing the right adhesive for the job, consider the location of the tile – indoors or outdoors – and also whether you will be tiling a floor or a wall, and whether the area is dry or wet. Organic mastics are a popular tile adhesive because they don’t require mixing to help your wall tiles stay put. But this type of adhesive does not perform well at all in areas that are outdoors or those that may come into contact with heat.

Another common adhesive for tiles is thin-set mortar, which has a good bonding strength and offers more flexible uses than organic tile mastics. Dry-set and water mortar are forms of thin-set mortar, which is a combination of sand, cement and a compound that helps in water retention. It’s easy to mix with water, and it lets adhesives hydrate.

Acrylic mixed mortar and latex mortar contain additives that will help increase adhesion, and lower the rate of water absorption. These are good adhesives to use when the setting bed won’t tolerate some of the cheaper adhesive choices.

If you don’t use the correct tile adhesive for your application, your project won’t add the beauty you had in mind when you envisioned it. The adhesive is the binding agent between the tiles and the base. You can find tile adhesives that are already mixed, and some others will require preparation. Prepare the adhesive to your contractor’s specifications, or based on the product information, regarding the type of tile you are installing, and where you are installing it.

Thin-set adhesive should be prepared with water or a liquid additive and the powder mix. Mix it together with a trowel, to ensure a thick consistency. You can also use a drill, run at a slow speed, to mix your adhesive more easily. The tile adhesive paste should not drip when it is applied – it should be smooth and easy to apply, so that it will serve your house for a long time.
